My colleagues and I were invited to reflect on a single word: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orange<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. First, we thought about what came to mind when hearing it. Then we looked at an actual orange. Finally, we tasted it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The words flowed easily: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orange, sphere, juice, zest, bright.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But soon, deeper and more personal ones emerged: memories, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christmas, family, tradition.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What began as a sensory prompt evolved into a powerful exercise in memory, imagination, and connection. A simple orange became a doorway \u2014 to feeling, to remembering, to meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This moment strengthened my belief in how powerful sensorial experiences are \u2014 not only for us as adults, but especially for the young children we work with every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout my years at university, I learned about Jean Piaget\u2019s theory of cognitive development, which helped me understand why sensory experiences are so foundational to early learning. In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensorimotor Stage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (birth to age 2), children construct knowledge through physical action and sensory exploration. As they enter the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preoperational Stage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ages 2\u20137), they begin to use language and symbols; however, these abstract ideas are still grounded in concrete, sensory-rich experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Piaget, children build <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">schemas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 mental frameworks for understanding \u2014 by interacting directly with real materials and the physical world. In short, they learn by doing, feeling, and sensing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41034 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Blog-banners-6-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Blog-banners-6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Blog-banners-6-1030x579.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Blog-banners-6-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Blog-banners-6-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Blog-banners-6-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neuroscientists have shown that sensory input \u2014 especially smell and taste \u2014 is directly linked to the brain\u2019s emotional and memory centres.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why the scent of an orange can suddenly transport us to a holiday morning from years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For children, this means that sensorial activities don\u2019t just stimulate the senses \u2014 they also shape how they feel, remember, and understand<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multisensory learning activates more of the brain<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading to stronger and longer-lasting learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, sensorial experiences are not a supplement to learning \u2014 they are the foundation of how learning takes root.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><b>Avenor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our aim is to create memorable, meaningful learning experiences that connect the sensory with the emotional, and the physical with the cognitive. These aren\u2019t just play moments \u2014 they are purposeful, educational experiences that support:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Language development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as they describe textures, tastes, and colours;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Emotional growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as they connect experiences with feelings;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Memory formation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through multisensory encoding;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cognitive skills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like reasoning and problem-solving, as they explore, combine, and test ideas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are just a few of the ways we intentionally nurture sensorial learning at Avenor:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nature trays<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filled with seasonal items to explore by touch and smell;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cooking club<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where children measure, mix, and taste ingredients;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Listening walks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop auditory awareness and descriptive vocabulary;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Texture and collage art<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to build fine motor skills and visual discrimination;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scented playdough and malleable materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for calming, tactile exploration;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sand and water play<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to investigate volume, flow, and cause-and-effect through touch.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These activities may look simple, but they are thoughtfully designed to align with children\u2019s developmental needs \u2014 and to offer meaningful, memorable learning opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As educators, our role is not only to teach children <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the world, but to help them experience it \u2014 fully, vividly, and with joy. That means making sure they are not only hearing about new ideas, but tasting them, smelling them, holding them, and feeling them<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Avenor, we believe that when learning begins with the senses, it becomes personal<\/span><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emotional, and lasting.
