Dear parents, has it ever happened to you to read a message sent by your child and understand absolutely nothing? Or to hear them say something enthusiastically while you are left with the feeling that you missed half the conversation?<\/span><\/p>\n

You are not alone. The language of Generation Z (and already Generation Alpha) evolves rapidly and sometimes feels like a true secret code. The good news? It can be decoded. And, more importantly, it can become an opportunity for connection rather than frustration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Out of a desire to help a journalist friend working on an article about this topic, Dana Papadima, Educational Director at Avenor, had an experience from which we can all benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u201c<\/span>I tried to lend a hand to a journalist friend who is preparing a more extensive article about the language – or rather, languages – used by children and young people. He thought he would be consulting a linguistics specialist; I turned out to be an amateur. I DO NOT KNOW how young people speak, what English or American expressions they borrow, or what gestures accompany their words or exclamations.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In desperation, I turned to a few high school students with whom I have very warm relationships. However, in the presence of teachers and adults in general, they tend to self-censor. An adult attempting to immerse themselves in their language codes would immediately be labelled cringe \u2014 the only word from their jargon I have known for about three years.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Natalia helped me put together a list, and I invite both teachers and parents to read it, take note, and enjoy it. I promise \u2014 it\u2019s worth it.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A Mini Gen Z Dictionary<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>That\u2019s bussin!<\/span><\/i>\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s really good \/ I love it.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Slay!<\/span><\/i>\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>You did an excellent job!<\/span><\/i>\u201d or \u201c<\/span>You look amazing!<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I have rizz.<\/span><\/i>\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>I\u2019m charismatic \/ socially confident<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>YOLO.<\/span><\/i>\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>You only live once \u2014 it\u2019s worth trying<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Bae<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means: someone very dear (a boyfriend, girlfriend, or special person).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Fri yay!<\/span><\/i>\u201d expresses maximum excitement that the weekend has arrived.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Din dins.<\/span><\/i>\u201d simply means\u2026 dinner \ud83d\ude42 (yes, sometimes it\u2019s that simple).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Moist<\/span><\/i>\u201d (followed by laughter) refers to a word considered funny or cringe in certain online contexts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Holibobs.<\/span><\/i>\u201d means: holiday or vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I-a dat \u00eenjoseal\u0103<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span><\/i> ( \u201c<\/span>He\/she got humiliated<\/span><\/i>.\u201d) means someone embarrassed or publicly shamed another person.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cM<\/span>i-a dat cu seen<\/span><\/i>.\u201d (\u201c<\/span>Left me on seen.<\/span><\/i>\u201d) means your message was read but not answered (and\u2026 yes, it stings a little).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Ghosted<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means someone suddenly disappeared from communication without explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cL-a casperizat.\u201d (\u201cCaspered.\u201d) means a softer or temporary version of ghosting \u2014 disappearing for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Mane<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>man<\/span><\/i>,\u201d \u201c<\/span>bro<\/span><\/i>,\u201d an informal way friends address each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Chill.<\/span><\/i>\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>calm down<\/span><\/i>\u201d or \u201c<\/span>relax.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Sho<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>me too.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Soto<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>seriously,<\/span><\/i>\u201d \u201c<\/span>for real,<\/span><\/i>\u201d without exaggeration.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTe-a luat randeaua.\u201d means someone verbally attacked you and left you without a comeback.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Simp<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means someone who does too much for a person they like, usually without receiving the same interest in return.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Harf\u0103<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means exaggeration, bragging, or storytelling meant to impress.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I\u2019m weak<\/span><\/i>\u201d \/ \u201c<\/span>I\u2019m dead<\/span><\/i>\u201d \/ \u201cmor\u201d mean something is extremely funny.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>FR FR<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means: \u201c<\/span>for real, seriously<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Sus<\/span><\/i>.\u201d means: suspicious \u2014 something feels off.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Does Understanding This Language Matter?<\/b><\/p>\n

It is not just about words. It is about belonging, identity, and the way children build their social relationships. For them, these expressions are natural \u2014 just as the expressions of our own generation once were for us.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we try to understand their language, we communicate something far more important than linguistic correctness: \u201c<\/span>I am curious about your world.<\/span><\/i>\u201d And from there, a real conversation often begins.<\/span><\/p>\n

We may never say \u201c<\/span>slay<\/span><\/i>\u201d perfectly without sounding forced \u2014 and that is perfectly fine. But if we can translate a few words and smile together about them, we are already speaking the same language.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2026 is truly bussin. \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n
