Less screen time, more fresh air, more physical activity. And yet, in everyday life, reality often looks different. When it\u2019s cold, we stay indoors. When it\u2019s muddy, we avoid going outside. When safety concerns arise, we tend to choose the \u201cmore controlled\u201d option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, many children have access to nature only occasionally, even though parents generally consider it important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, research is becoming increasingly clear. A comprehensive report published by <\/span><b>UNICEF in 2018, <\/b><b><i>Learning Through Play<\/i><\/b><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlights that during the early years of life, children learn most effectively through active exploration in real-world contexts that involve movement, interaction, and varied environments. Nature provides exactly this type of setting: unpredictable, rich in sensory experiences, and open-ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, for young children, learning does not happen only at a table with carefully prepared materials. It happens while jumping in puddles, playing among leaves, and engaging with things that may not look \u201ceducational\u201d at first glance. In these real-life contexts, the transfer of acquired knowledge and skills happens more naturally for young learners. When preschool children step into the forest, they are not simply \u201cgetting some fresh air\u201d; they are entering a living laboratory where effective learning &#8211; motivation, engagement, and thinking &#8211; comes to life in the most natural way possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-45107 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Summer-school-300x251.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Summer-school-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Summer-school-768x644.png 768w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Summer-school.png 940w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>But How Often Do We Actually Provide These Experiences in a Typical Preschool Program?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>From \u201cGoing Outside\u201d to Structured Learning in Nature<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference is not only one of frequency, but also of intention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an increasing number of Western education systems, including the British one, time spent outdoors is not considered a break between activities but an extension of the curriculum. Within the<\/span><b> Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the learning environment &#8211; including outdoor spaces &#8211; is regarded as essential for the development of language, logical thinking, and social skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, we are not talking about \u201cfree play\u201d in the superficial sense of the term, but about carefully guided experiences in which children discover concepts through direct interaction with the world around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Does This Look Like in Practice?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/en\/nursery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avenor Nursery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at its Greenfield campus, where this approach takes a very concrete form. Just a short walk away, the forest becomes a learning environment for children every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not a \u201cspecial occasion\u201d but part of their daily routine. Colourful rubber boots, belonging to both children and teachers, are always lined up in the hallway. Rain jackets and waterproof overalls are always ready in lockers and cubbies, regardless of the weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-46213 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Tania-Raduta-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Tania-Raduta-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Tania-Raduta-1030x1030.png 1030w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Tania-Raduta-80x80.png 80w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Tania-Raduta-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.avenor.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Tania-Raduta.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/>\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For us, the forest is an extension of the classroom,\u201d <\/span><\/i><b>says Tania R\u0103du\u021b\u0103, Head of Avenor Nursery.<\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cChildren don\u2019t go outside simply to burn off energy; a large part of their learning happens there. In the forest, children give themselves permission to try new things. A fallen tree trunk becomes a balance beam. This is where we see the <\/span><\/i><b><i>courage to experiment<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that builds their self-confidence.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activities are adapted to each age group and stage of development:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt age two, children discover the world primarily through their senses. In the forest, they touch, listen, and observe. It is the beginning of their relationship with the natural environment. The forest also helps children stay focused for extended periods. Their curiosity grows, and their imagination becomes richer. At this age, the forest becomes a \u2018living encyclopedia\u2019 where many theoretical concepts gain meaning through direct experience.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our programme is designed to help children become young nature experts. They learn to observe how the forest changes <\/span><\/i><b><i>throughout the seasons<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gaining an understanding of life cycles.
