An innovative partnership between Avenor and a public school

to transform the way students learn mathematics in primary school.

PACT (Applied Projects in Transdisciplinary Contexts) for IMPACT is a project through which Avenor aims to actively contribute to the modernisation of education in Romania.

Through a partnership between an international private school and a public school, the project aims to develop an innovative, scalable educational model that can be implemented in any school across Romania.

Two schools, one shared vision

Our partner in this endeavour is “Gheorghe Vernescu” School in Rñmnicu Sărat, a public school with a highly diverse community, ready to explore new teaching and learning models to demonstrate their viability and effectiveness.

Together, we are building a bridge between different educational environments, with the goal of transforming learning into an engaging and effective process, centred on the needs of both students and teachers.

What are we changing?

PACT for IMPACT proposes a fundamental transformation in the way mathematics is taught and learned in primary school. The project focuses on developing mathematical literacy and critical and creative thinking skills, while also offering teachers a framework for continuous professional development, mentoring, and co-teaching.

The project’s transdisciplinary approach is designed to connect mathematics with real-life situations, making it more accessible and engaging for students.

How?

Rethinking the way mathematics is taught in primary classes

Learning experiences connected to real life, where students apply mathematical concepts

Professional development for teachers, including reflection, mentoring, and collaborative teaching

Co-teaching sessions and study visits between teachers from the two partner schools

Workshops for parents to support learning at home

An after-school programme focused on exploration and practical application

Technology and digitalisation to enhance the school’s administrative capacity

Some results

Mathematics magazine

” We suggested that the students become little journalists and explore the world around them through the “eyes of mathematics.” We explained that mathematics is not just about calculations or formulas, but is a universal language that we use every day—when we measure ingredients, plan a budget, play soccer, or program a game. The children were challenged to identify real-life situations in which they use mathematical concepts and turn them into accessible and interesting articles that their classmates could understand.

This magazine is proof that mathematics can be beautiful, practical, and human—when viewed with openness, creativity, and confidence in the potential of every child.

The educational garden

”Learning should not be limited to desks and textbooks. Exposing children to nature and activities such as gardening at an early age revives the first and most intuitive learning environment, where direct exploration and sensory interaction cultivate curiosity, understanding, and respect for the living world.

We started this project in March, in the 2nd and 3rd grades, to try to demonstrate how practical gardening activities can be harmoniously integrated into the mathematics curriculum, transforming often abstract concepts into concrete and engaging experiences for children. This approach brought mathematics closer to students in a playful and interactive way, enjoying real success among the little ones.”

Workshops for Parents

Parents of primary school students took part in interactive workshops focused on the teaching of mathematics, where they explored modern, research-based strategies to effectively support their children’s learning.

They discovered how learning at the class’s natural pace fosters deep understanding, why it’s important for students to draw their own conclusions, and how maths can become accessible to all when taught with patience and connected to real-life contexts.

These workshops created a space for reflection and dialogue between school and families, helping parents provide more mindful and balanced support for their children’s mathematical journey.
