Daniel O’Connell
Teacher of English
I firmly believe each new school year is an opportunity to become a better teacher. Ever since I began teaching in the Southeast United States, my work has focused on refining my teaching style to the changing needs of my students. At Avenor, I am excited for the chance to grow even more as an educator!
My passion for education began at a very young age, through a love for reading. I grew up in a mobile family, and throughout living in Europe, the Pacific, and North America, I used reading as a way to pass the time. Series like “The Magic School Bus” and later series such as “Eragon” helped me adjust to the many changes going on in my life. Reading served as an important part of expressing myself, and developing this could not have happened without the incredible teachers and professors I had. Every teacher’s role, from early education to college, should be to help students develop the abilities to express themselves, and strong literacy skills are necessary for this growth.
In 2020, I graduated from the University of Georgia with a focus on English and English Education. One year later, I received my masters of English Education, this time with an endorsement in reading instruction. In 2024, I began working in an international school setting and teaching English Language Learners and helping them earn the WASC diploma.
Now, with six years of teaching under my belt, I continue to employ pedagogical practices by constantly refining my teaching practices. In 2022, I began utilizing the Modern Classroom Project to better engage students in their learning through self-guided models, and a greater focus on direct feedback to help students grow in their studies. In 2024, I also worked in an international school setting as a senior class advisor alongside my teaching duties, and helped ensure graduation requirements were met as the Senior Thesis Coordinator.
I lead an incredibly active lifestyle, ever since my time as a member of the UGA collegiate rowing team. I enjoy hiking, backpacking, bikepacking (like backpacking but even better), and strength training. In 2026, I married my best friend, and together we love exploring new places. When I am not outside or in the gym, I am catching up on my GoodReads, or learning a new language with my wife, like Romanian!
At Avenor, I am excited to experience life in Romania! I have always been fond of experiencing new cultures, such as my previous years in Taiwan, and traveling through Asia, Europe, and the Americas has only increased my excitement about moving to a new country. I look forward to finding my place in the Avenor community and learning about the country that I get to call my new home.
