Katie Hargreaves

Teacher of Media Studies

I have always enjoyed getting lost in fictional worlds and stories. As a child, I would take ten books a week from the library and hungrily eat them all up. I loved disappearing into a fantasy realm that could only be accessed by those with the passion to find them.

As I grew older, I became aware of the possibilities of being able to create these worlds myself. I joined youth theatres and societies, began to study drama, media and film and immerse myself into those worlds: creating something from one idea, one tiny spark, and turning it into something exciting and original to share with others felt wonderful. Throughout my teens and early twenties, I performed in many local plays, pantomimes and musicals, taking on parts from chorus girl to leading lady.

After completing my A Levels in English, Media, Film and Theatre Studies, I went to Edge Hill University to study Film and Creative Writing. Developing my knowledge in this way allowed me to discover film making in a whole new way, a critical and analytical way that showed me just how much work went into creating a film or television show, and I was fascinated by every step.

My decision to go into teaching was inspired by my wonderful lecturers at Edge Hill University, who has shaped and developed my existing passions. I felt that with my background in performance combined with my love of film I could excel within the profession, creating interesting and exciting lessons– something I hope my students will agree with me on.

My teaching career began with me completing a PGCE back at Edge Hill University, often cited as the best teaching university in the United Kingdom. From there I became involved in the National Citizen Service, a government run non-profit summer programme that introduced 14 and 15 year olds to the arts (even missing my own graduation to help these young people edit their productions).

Before joining Avenor, I have taught four years of Creative Media Production at Warrington & Vale Royal College in the United Kingdom. Teaching this course combined my interests in film, television, creative writing and drama as the curriculum allowed us to create wonderful projects such as Single Camera Dramas, Music Videos, and Documentaries.

I am happy to be teaching Media Studies IGCSE at Avenor, to allow my students to study the subject from Grade 9 upwards. I believe that Media literacy is incredibly important in the modern world for both staff and students, so I look forward to working with both on increasing digital technologies throughout Avenor this year. I will also share these passions with all students throughout high school as I join a team dedicated to developing students through exploration of universities, careers, personal development and enrichment.
