Marana Matei

School Counsellor

I am a psychologist with (maybe too) many interests. One of my core beliefs is that people are too complex to be reduced to one theory or system. Consequently I am constantly finding different angles to gain a better understanding of how change can take place. This is why I keep shifting my interests.

In 2010 you would have found me doing group work in hospitals and NGOs. In 2012 you would find me in the poorest areas more involved in social work. In 2017 you would find me in the classroom teaching psychology. From 2020 you could find me in a pediatric outpatient clinic. Starting with 2022 you can now find me at Avenor finding ways to remove barriers to learning and personal growth. My current role is to lead the “Personalised Approach” project that aims to improve the learning experience of students.

I’ll tell you my story. Like very fast. I am an eternal student in the art and craft of both teaching and psychotherapy. I do mean eternal. I’ll probably never stop learning. I’ve studied abroad, in the UK, at University College London (UCL). It’s one of the best universities in the world if you’re interested in psychology. And yes, studying psychology at a great university you kind of find out how our minds work, why we do the things we do…or don’t do the things we should. And there’s not just ONE theory about any of that – there’s plenty – and there’s science behind each and every one of those theories.

In school, life in general and also as a therapist you’ll find that continuous learning is a bit of an evergreen life hack. In this spirit of that I graduated from quite a few programs. My top three, the ones I am most proud of, are: the Masters degree in Clinical Psychology, the certification in Ericksonian Family Therapy and the one in Solution Focused Therapy.

Working alongside children and teens and their families and enabling them to leverage their inner resources and abilities is my mission. It’s one that brings enormous personal and professional satisfaction. I’m very grateful to be able to play this part in someone’s life.

Looking now, At Avenor, I’m continuing my work from a privileged position. This is the only context that I can imagine where I can utilise all my skills as a clinician, counsellor, and teacher.

For the future I hope that this project, Personalised Approach, will reach as many students as possible and that we will learn and grow together.
