Learning Assistant in Primary School

Avenor College is welcoming a passionate Learning Assistant (LA) as a member of the Primary School team; this will work in cooperation with class teachers, with specialist teachers, with other LAs, under the guidance of the Primary Learning Leadership Team.

The purpose of the role is to further the work of the school in line with the school mission and values (Adventure, Vocation, Excellence, Nature, Opportunity, Relationships) by providing support to the class teacher ensuring that each child reaches their best. The role has shared responsibility for the development of the social, emotional, physical, intellectual and aesthetic learning of students.


Responsibilities:

LAs will work together with teachers to ensure continued learning and progression, that the environment of the classroom is stimulating and orderly and that the classroom routines are respected and upheld on a day by day basis. These are not exhaustives.

At the beginning of the school year:

  • Get familiar with the school policies, procedures, routines;
  • Collaborate with the class teacher to know the students in the class and understand their needs;
  • Get familiar, at the beginning of the year, with the scheme of work and the class rules and routines.

Prior to the lesson:

  • Get familiar, before each lesson, with the learning objectives and touch base with the teacher about the expectations for the lesson;
  • Plan with the class teacher or independently differentiated activities according to students’ needs;
  • Prepare resources for the lesson, as agreed with the class teacher.

During the lesson:

  • Follow the lesson plan and work with small groups of students or with individual students, as agreed prior to the lesson
  • Be flexible and agile, make eye contact with the class teacher and be ready to intervene/adapt when the routine does not go as planned;
  • Assist teachers in documenting learning and contribute to displays.

After the lessons:

  • Reflect with the class teacher on the learning happening in the lesson and how children progressed;
  • Make plans for the following lesson;
  • Update your notes on each lesson and child, as agreed with the class teacher.


Other duties include:

  • Accompany students on school trips and supervise as part of the educational team.
  • Assist teachers in the maintenance of good order, discipline and respect for others among all pupils; in promoting the school’s rules and values; in safeguarding health and safety; and in developing relationships with and between pupils conducive to optimum learning (during lessons, breaks, school trips).
  • Support short term cover of the classes in the absence of the class teachers. Cover will be always recorded in Engage and will follow the same rules as for class teachers.
  • Any work undertaken by the learning assistant with the class will be agreed and planned with the class teacher and under the supervision of the Primary LLT Team.
  • Supervise students during breaks, according to the School Duty Schedule, for a length that will be in line with the one of a class teacher.
  • Keep up to date with current educational thinking and practice by attendance at courses, workshops and meetings and through professional reading.

The class teacher working with a LA will ensure that:

  • Allocates time at the beginning of the year to set up the class routines and help the LA know the profile of the class.
  • Shares the scheme of work with the LA.
  • Regularly allocates time at an interval agreed with the LA for planning and for reflection.
  • Creates a class atmosphere where the LA is used to advance learning and feels encouraged and valued.

Working times: 

Learning assistants work 5 days a week (40 hours/week). The daily hours in school are from 8.15 to 15:15/16.15, though these may be occasionally extended for meetings or for other special events. 38 hours are spent in school and 2 hours will be used flexibly for planning.  From these, 27 hours are allocated to class support and duties and 4 hours are for teaching.

At Grade Pregătitoare will work with a class throughout the year.

Grades 1 to 4 will be associated flexibly, according to the needs of the school; they might work for a period of time with a particular class teacher or, at other times, with a group of classes. They might be allocated to a student or to a group of students. In either case, they are expected to work in close cooperation with the teacher they are working with at the time.


Support systems and accountability:

  • Learning assistants will be allocated a mentor and a PM.
  • Learning assistants are subject to evaluation carried out by their PM in collaboration with the Primary LLT Team. They are also subject to the school policies on grievance and discipline.

Safeguarding:

Learning assistants are expected to observe the normal standards in relation to confidentiality to information. Confidential information may not be disclosed in writing, in any other tangible form, orally or visually. Teacher assistants shall not, at any time either during or after the period of contract, publish, disclose or otherwise divulge any confidential information to any person without the prior written consent of Avenor.
